MINI-BLOG: Walk The Line

Walk The Line Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2005)
Believe it or not this very irrelevant movie soundtrack made me think a lot. Do I like actors who portray singers actually redo the songs with their own voice? I think I do – at least on screen. I remember back to the end of “Back to the Future” where the performer singing “Johnny B. Goode” obviously isn’t Michael J. Fox … the lip-sync just looks odd and takes me out of the moment. But to release an album of the songs covered by the actors? I don’t know … I mean, I guess I can understand if people really liked those version, why not? But these aren’t providing any new value to the song besides worse singing and better production. Sure, the music on “Walk The Line Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” is good – but why not just listen to the actual performers’ versions? It’s so much better and leaves this album feeling completely irrelevant. [3.9/10.0] Ok

Good movie- Not so good singing – Bad Album

  • Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009 at 13:14 | #2

I liked the new production on the album. With Johnny Cash – his stuff either sounds timeless or straight from the boring 70’s. At least here it all exudes with the “newness” all of this stuff sounded when it first came out.

Thanks for the comment. The next album I’m currently listening to is a pretty hyped one from “back in your day.” I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on it when I write up a review.

MINI-BLOG: Wild Honey

The Beach Boys – Wild Honey (1967)
This was the first Beach Boy album where Brian Wilson stepped back from his natural songwriting and producing roles … and you can tell. Suddenly – and jarringly – The Beach Boys are ripped from the bright, shiny and polished hooks of “Smiley Smile” and thrown smack dab into the psychedelic late 60’s. It was the times and I guess the rest of the group wanted to stay relevant but either this very new setting (to their music) or the change to meet it makes the result very confused. [3.8/10.0] Ok

The Beach Boys were never the same after Smile imploded…

MINI BLOG: Organix

The Roots – Organix (1993)
Hmm … as hip and relevant as The Roots have always been in conversation, this debut album sure smacks more of old school jazz than hip hop. And that, ultimately, is the undoing of this – dare I say it? – overrated band: they actually combine the weaknesses of both genres. The musicians seem forced to continually play the same “live” sample ad nauseum while MC Black Thought scats/raps musical phrases more often than actual words. When it works, it works, but multiple sittings of “songs” 5+ minutes in length border on the tedious. I’m not so aware of any of The Roots music so maybe their later records justify their pervasive praise. [3.5/10.0] Ok

MINI BLOG: High N’ Dry

Def Leppard – High ‘N’ Dry (1981)
Though actually their second album, “High ‘N’ Dry” sounds like the first real Def Leppard album (“On Through The Night” sounded like a generic 70’s band – who knew?) complete with all the trademarks: chugging riffs, pre-choruses with musical dropouts, and big, fat choruses (with chorus and reverb a-plenty on the vocals). When I first listened to “Hysteria” earlier this year I thought it was Def Leppard’s greatest hits package but really it’s just their masterpiece. “High ‘N’ Dry” seems to be more of the rule – a collection of samey, lame rock jams though “Bringin’ On The Heartbreak” shows signs of greater things to come. [3.7/10.0] Ok

MINI BLOG: Josie Maran

Saw Josie Maran at the make up store next to Barnes & Noble in Union Square. She’s way shorter than I thought, but is obviously still in love with Richard Killiam.

Mini Blog: Sick Sleep

In the past 48 hours I’ve slept 28 hours! Yes, that is more than half of two days. I was sick as shit and immobile … just lying on my bed watching Judge Judy’s online, Netflix movies, and passing out. The one time I got up was to get food and that was a mistake. But, I woke up today feeling a lot better …

Mini Blog: Led Zep II

I just played all the way through Led Zeppelin II – only stopping to learn some licks. My memory’s a little rusty but I kicked the shit out of that album!

Mini Blog: Stern Sighting?

I could’ve sworn I walked past Howard Stern today … but it was at 10:30 in the morning and he’s still doing his show then. I’ll listen to the rerun and find out for sure.

Definitely not him as he did a full show today but, damn, that guy looked exactly like Stern!

    Could it have been Ralph?

  • Thursday, May 21st, 2009 at 12:15 | #3

I doubt it. The guy had long black hair like Howard, not short whatever it is that Ralph has on his head. And I didn’t see a berry!

Mini Blog: Mavs Eliminated

My Mavs season is over. But, I have to admit, it feels a hell of a lot better losing in the second round to a better team than in the first round to a worse one. Cou(last two seasons)gh!!!
