Out Of Commission

Well … I’m not absolutely positive but the record might be broken (no pun intended). Over the long, Memorial Day weekend my roommates and I had a BBQ in our modest-sized backyard. Some people came over, and as we waited for the first round of food to be grilled, I threw around a Nerf football with my friend Dorian.

Again, our backyard is small so we couldn’t do anything more than just throw it back and forth – we weren’t running or roughhousing. On one catch I jumped and came down wrong with most of my weight landing on the side of my right foot. I knew instantly I was done, but I thought it was nothing more than a charlie (charley?) horse.

Well, later in the night I could see a little swelling so I put some ice on my foot and thought nothing of it. But, it steadily got worse. Eventually, I was having trouble putting my full weight on it, but heroically still went 5-0 on the beer pong table! Unfortunately, when I woke up Monday morning the side of my foot was twice its normal size and I couldn’t take a step.

So back to that long-standing record I mentioned at the beginning of this post: I haven’t broken a bone in my body my entire life. Has this small bad catch two-days ago finally snapped my Hank Aaron-like record?

I doubt it … my guess is just a severe sprain. Still, I’d like to dedicate this blog to Ryan “Bubbles” Mallory – college roommate who was on crutches for so long at the end of freshman year that the nickname “Crutches” threatened to supplant “Bubbles.” Being able to only use one leg at a time is quite humbling. If I want to carry things, it’s in a backpack or in my mouth, and the fastest/easiest way to navigate up stairs is on my hands and knees.

Not everything is so bad, though. I am working from home this whole week in hopes that the swelling goes down enough that I can safely use the Jersey buses and New York subway next week. Ok, back to work!

UPDATE: Finally got the underwater camera we used on the Caribbean cruise developed and put up two great pics from it.
