Top 10

Who doesn’t like lists? Here are my opinions is the absolutely correct, infallible truth.

Top 10 Basketball Players
As the great Kurtis Blow once said, “basketball is my favorite sport.” To me it sometimes feels like the only sport. Yes, I am an NBA fan in every version of the word. I love watching and playing the game, I love the soap opera behind the scenes, I love reading basketblogs all day and I troll the rumor forums mercilessly. I live and breathe the game when it’s on, as my infamous “playoff pushups” can attest to, and I adore reading about the sport’s legendary history (hell, I do all sorts of crazy shit with it over at my other site, NBA Sim). Just as comics and music once were, basketball is just so “me” and it now pervades every day I live. Here are the 10 of the top reasons why:

# Player Years Active Most Famous Team(s)
1 Dirk Nowitzki 1999-Present Dallas Mavericks
If you couldn’t guess this one then you don’t know me. I latched onto the Dallas Mavericks immediately when I first started to get into basketball in 2003. In fact, they were the reason I began watching the sport. They had three huge stars in Steve Nash, Michael Finley and Dirk but the up-and-coming Nowitzki was the guy I liked best. As my interest (some say obsession) with the sport increased my appreciation for Dirk grew as well. Maybe it just was a happy coincidence that the guy I rooted for the most turned out to be a non-flashy, hard-working, cerebral and super-passionate baller (my favorite qualities in a player). Perhaps it was just luck that when I became stats crazy with the sport that I discovered he pretty much defines basketball efficiency (my preferred measure of greatness in the sport). Who knows, who cares? So many of my emotions coincide with the success of this 7-foot German between the months of November and July that I’m sure I’ll eventually become what I hated most when I was a kid: a sports-motivated crybaby when he retires.
2 Wilt Chamberlain 1960-1973 Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Lakers
3 Larry Bird 1980-1992 Boston Celtics
4 Magic Johnson 1980-1991, 1996 Los Angeles Lakers
5 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 1970-1989 Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers
6 Charles Barkley 1985-2000 Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns
7 Steve Nash 1997-Present Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns
8 Dennis Rodman 1987-2000 Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls
9 Pete Maravich 1971-1980 Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans Jazz
10 Gilbert Arenas 2002-Present Washington Wizards

By the way, in case you’re wondering, Michael Jordan comes up at #22 on my favorite list. Sorry, but the guy was a little too perfect for me.

Top 10 Movies
Although my patented obsession shines in many things, I actually consider myself only a casual fan of movies. I love watching movies with some form of artistic merit, independent films, foreign movies and even silent pictures. I also find myself continuing to go see shitty, comic book movies and stupid, slapstick comedies (though usually not liking them). So I’m really all over the map, but I do pride myself on at least watching a ton of movies (ah, Netflix!). Here’s the cream of that crop (based on preference, not any particular other worthiness).
