2008 Basketball Games
Me. Basketball. We are lovers. The basketball season is like the school season in that they begin in one year and end in another. So, most of the worst games are from the dissappointing ending to last season and the best are from the hopeful beginning of the current one. I have only listed the nominees for Best Basketball Game down below with game notes.
13 games were up for best new basketball game that I watched this year. Last year there were 7.
BEST: New York Knicks vs. Dallas Mavericks - 11/16/08The Mavs had stumbled out of the gate for the 2009 NBA season. They lost five games in a row - the first time they had done so in over a decade. And, it so happened the sixth game happened to be against the New York Knicks ... you know, in my neck of the woods. My dad was up in town visiting me so I had 2 awesome seats to the game. I was nervous going in as not only had the Mavs been subpar but the Knicks were hot under new coach, Mike D'Antoni. And it turned out I had a right to be nervous. The Mavs never led the entire game ... but somehow tied it at the last second and then won in overtime! It was a messy game but it was a great rollercoaster ride; and one with the correct ending. And I had seen it in person with pops!
RUNNER-UP: Dallas Mavericks vs. Minnesota Timberwolves - 12/30/08I'm on a quest to watch all Mavericks games using my NBA League Pass (I've already failed but I won't let that stop me!) and I had already missed this one driving back up to New York from Virginia. But, League Pass allows you to watch full games from the day before so I loaded this baby up. And by half time I wish I hadn't. The Mavs were down 29 points ... an absolute nightmare. This one was destined to be a blowout. Except the angelic Mavs somehow buckled down the defense and heroically pulled out the greatest comeback in their 28-year history! Huzzah!!!!
WORST: New Orleans Hornets vs. Dallas Mavericks – 4/29/08What can I say? The Mavs were overwhelmed at the end of last season. They traded for hall-of-famer, Jason Kidd, but just couldn't get acclimated to him in time and lost to the up-and-coming New Orleans Hornets. I don't have a whole lot to say about this one, actually. It seemed like only Dirk was the only Maverick putting any heart into the series. By this fifth game I knew they were toast and that the Mavericks' season was over.
RUNNER-UP: Boston Celtics vs. Los Angeles Lakers - 6/17/08I wasn't a big fan of the Lakers-Celtics series to begin with. Sure, they were the best teams standing at the end of the season, but I didn't buy into the whole "whoa this is Magic vs. Bird all over again" hype. But, even with my apathetic distance from the series, wow, that very last game ended with a turd! A 40-point blow out? Really? Actually, it's not surprising to this basketball historian. With all of this "Kobe Bryant is clutch" talk, he's actually been pooping in final games of series for years. But, still, what a dull way to end the NBA season.
