2008 Live Shows

2008 Live Shows

This was the first year that I really took advantage of living in/near Manhattan as I attended almost 20 live shows. And though most of these were concerts I also threw in some baseball games in legendary stadiums marked for death, comedy shows, and even a burlesque strip tease! Listed below are all the shows I saw in order (from left to right and top to bottom).

I saw 19 live (non-basketball) shows this year. Last year I saw a pathetic 6.

Weezer - Madison Square Garden (9/24/08) BEST: Weezer - Madison Square Garden (9/24/08)
I already gave a play-by-play account of the concert, going down the entire setlist so I won't repeat myself. The simple fact is that Weezer absolutely destroyed my face when I took Cassie to go see them in September. Rivers shared singing duties with new bassist, Scott Shriner - a move I wasn't completely shocked by. What was surprising was how great a move this turned out to be. Rivers was free to roam around the stage and do all these hilarious and cool antics - his magnetic persona does not require him to be singing to demand the attention of everyone in a stadium. Lots of B-Sides and crazy covers were thrown in, making it feel like a really special event. In fact, several times during the show I felt like they were playing just to me.

Mooney Suzuki – Luna Lounge (1/18/08) RUNNER-UP: Mooney Suzuki – Luna Lounge (1/18/08)
Cassie, Tori and I ventured into the cold Brooklyn streets earlier this year to go see a concert that was being filmed for an episode of Mtv's "Made" show. We sat through three opening, indie bands that were less than stellar and I became a little nervous as to what the grand finale was going to be like. Sure, I'd stick around to see the "Made" cameras come out but I wasn't expecting Mooney Suzuki's rocking performance to be as great as it was. The lead singer looks and sings just like Dave Grohl so there was an instant rapport and though the preceding bands were all way indie, Suzuki was 100% rock. Awesome show from out of nowhere. Hell, I even purchased one of their CDs at the end (my first physical music product purchase in years)!
Random Rockabilly Band and Burlesque Dancers – Somewhere in DC (12/27/08) WORST: Random Rockabilly Band and Burlesque Dancers – Somewhere in DC (12/27/08)
While on Christmas vacation I met up with old college buddy, Jeff Cretz in his new Arlington apartment. As we were gabbing it up (pun intended!), another JMU alum from my past, Rich Kachold, showed up. They were going into DC to see a "rockabilly/burlesque" show because one of Rich's old high school classmates was one of the dancers. Cassie and I decided to tag along and, though it was quite the story, it was a boring concert. The band was forgettable and one of the burlesque dancers was overweight. It was the only live performance I attended in 2008 that I didn't enjoy. Unfortunately, I forgot to snap any photos of the band or dancers (maybe because it was so dull), so here's a drunk Rich on a motorcycle-shaped chair on the bar's deck.

Comedy Show That I Remember Little About RUNNER-UP: Comedy Show That I Remember Little About
Early in the year Tori's boyfriend and visitor from lands of an Irish sort, Stephen, made a trip state-side to the New York area. One night we all went to some comedy club near midtown and watched a bunch of non-famous comedians. The place was nice, the comedians weren't bad (I remember laughing a lot), and the drinks were expensive but not watered down. However, I can't remember when this happened, where it was, or who any of the comedians were. Though that doesn't make this a bad experience, per se, it certainly was forgettable. Obviously, I don't have any photos of the night so here's a nice picture of Stephen in mid zanity.
